Puppy Class: We strongly recommend that you find a puppy training class. Most puppy kindergartens will allow you to enroll your dog after it has completed its full round of puppy shots (generally at 14-16 weeks). Baxter and Bella is one of the most comprehensive and cost effective. With our 25% discount code (Sierra) you can get lifetime access to their classes and consultation for about the same cost as a Puppy 101 class. Check out their website www.baxterandbella.com/learn-more
Even if you have raised pups before, a puppy training class is a great chance to review the basic training that every dog should have. It also provides an opportunity for your pup to have socialization with other dogs and other people, which is extremely important. Please don’t wait until your pup is 6-8 months old to enroll them in a training class. The trick to raising a good dog is to establish good habits and behaviors early on. It is much easier to teach a young pup good habits than it is to attempt to break an older dog of its bad habits. |
Crate: Dogs are den animals. In the wild, dogs (wolves, foxes, coyotes) dig dens for protection/insulation. They do not want to soil their dens because that can attract predators, so they walk away from their living space to go pee and poo. We use this natural instinct to help us house train puppies.
Crates generally come in two options: Hard Plastic Shell or Wire Crate. My personal preference is the plastic crate. I find it easier to clean and of the two options, it is the only one that is airline approved if there is travel in your dog’s future. Nail Trimmers and Styptic to keep small puppy nails trimmed and to stop bleeding in case you have trimmed a bit too close. Blunt Scissors for trimming hair around the eyes and between the toes. Slicker Brush and Rake to start with gentle grooming and then later de-matting if needed. Ear Cleaner We use “Epi-otic” solution. It contains alcohol and salicylic acid (aspirin). It’s the same thing that doctors recommend to humans for “swimmer’s ear”. Regular ear maintenance is a must for floppy eared dogs. Shampoo You want to be careful not to over bathe. Once a month is about the maximum or skin irritations may result (due to stripping of the oils off the skin too frequently). Nature’s Miracle this is a neutralizing solution to aid in the clean up of accidents. Without question, accidents will happen...this will help you when they do. |
Exercise Pen or X-Pen: This is a great option to help contain your pup when you don’t want to contain them in their crate. I use them for those times when I’m cooking or working on the computer and cannot keep my eyes directly on the pup.
Travel water/food dish: When you go hiking, don’t forget about your pup! They need to be well-hydrated. Doggie Poo Bags: Because it’s the right thing to do in order to keep in your neighbors’ good graces. Toys: Here are a variety of toys to keep your pup entertained and chewing on things that are not your couch, your leather shoes or the kids toys. ID Tags Training Treat Bag this is a small canvas treat bag used for puppy training. The trick to puppy training is to catch them doing the “right” thing so that you can provide an immediate reward and re-enforce good behavior. Typically, bait bags can be clipped on to your belt or pocket so that they are easy to reach. I used to just stuff my pockets with training treats, but you only have to make the mistake of not emptying your pockets before throwing your jeans in the wash once to convince you of the wisdom of a treat bag. |
